1. Welcome to our Spring-Summer Issue!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all,
What a busy summer! We kicked off three firsts:
* Women Who Minister to Women's Conference (Boulder)
* AWSA conference for authors and speakers (Atlanta)
* Write Away Weekend for women writing their first book
(Frisco, CO)
That and my 10 day vacation to Washington State caused our spring
newsletter
to come out in AUGUST?? OOPS!
(Pray that I will get a new assistant soon!)
; )
Just know that God moved at all these events and there will be
more
announcements about the future...stay tuned!
Love ya'll!
2. How to Organize Your One Day Event
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A one day SATURDAY event is nice to have if the women you wish
to reach are
too busy to get away for the weekend. But watch out. These events
can run
into more scheduling conflicts than a two or three day retreat.
This is
probably because the women are not really far enough away from home
to stop
feeling responsible for soccer games and other weekend rituals.
Even so, ONE DAY events are often the solution to help your busy
women grow
both spiritually and develop deeper friendships.
A ONE DAY event could be held at your church, or if you want to
appeal more
as an outreach to your local community, consider scheduling it in
a
conference room at a local hotel.
First, come up with your theme and purpose.
FOR EXAMPLE:
SAMPLE THEME: Your Heart's Desire
SAMPLE PURPOSE: To invite the women to find their heart's desire
through a
deeper relationship with God and with one another.
SAMPLE DECORATIONS: All things with hearts.
After you have established your theme and purpose, invite your
speaker. You
can call me if you need one. I speak at retreats and other events
and can
offer suggestions for other speakers as well. See www.sheppro.com
Here's a sample schedule:
8:00 Continental Breakfast or coffee time (optional)
9:00 Welcome and announcements, praise and worship, plus
special music.
(5 minutes for welcome; 5 minutes for announcements;
15 minutes for worship*; 5 minutes for special music*.)
*Talk to speaker to confer about the best musical theme
and tone to go with her message.
9:30 Speaker
10:30 Break
10:45 Workshops
11:45 Break
12:00 Additional Workshops
1:00 Break
1:15 Lunch and closing with music and speaker
(Eat first - 30 - 60 minutes; then special music - 5 minutes; speaker
- 45
-60 minutes; announcements - 5 minutes.)
Your event would end around 2:30 to 3:00. That would give your
busy women
plenty of time to reconnect with their weekend routine. But be sure
and let
the women know that your event is over at 3:00, not 1:15 as that
is when
lunch STARTS.
By the way, breakfast, lunch, and breaks are a great time for women
to visit,
which is a valuable benefit of your event. In addition, I think
lunch would
be a good time for the women (at individual tables) to share prayer
requests
with each other and to pray for one another. Please allow up to
40 minutes
for this if you choose to do it. But let the women know how long
they have
to pray, otherwise they may not have time to work through their
groups.
Prayer ministry can also be done in place of a workshop.
Also, for your breaks, consider having coffee, tea, cookies, fruit,
cheese,
veggies, and water available.
If you are bringing in a professional speaker (which is a really
good idea),
consider having your women pay an additional $2.00 to $15.00 each
to cover
the cost. The amount needed will depend on your speaker's fee and
the size
of your group.
You also need to consider the cost of the food and decorations
as well.
Although, you can serve a potluck if that would help. Also, be sure
and put
this event in your church budget, at least for next year. You might
even
find local business people who would help sponsor you or donate
door prizes.
And don't forget the most important thing you can do for your event...PRAY!
In fact, ask prayer warriors to cover your event. Ahhh- what a difference!!
Next issue, I'll talk about the TWO DAY RETREAT! ~ Linda Evans

3. SPEAKER'S FEATURE with Kathy Collard Miller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOW TO WORK WITH THE SPEAKER FOR YOUR EVENT
continued...
by Kathy Collard Miller
Kathy polled other speakers and asked them, in relationship to
women's
events, WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
Here are their answers:
SPEAKER 1: My expectation is that the event planner will want to
hear what
God has taught me through the years and develop their event to take
advantage
of what I have to offer.
SPEAKER 2: I do expect a certain level of respect while I am speaking.
Once,
there was a group of ladies within the larger retreat attendees
who insisted
upon talking to each other all the way through my presentation.
That made me
really uncomfortable. I also expect a private room in which I can
study, go
over my notes, or even pray with attendees individually if they
so desire.
SPEAKER 3: I expect to be in a hotel if at all possible rather
than stay in
a home. I know some speakers would rather be in a home, but I get
"peopled
out" if I cant be truly alone (the introvert thing of gaining
energy by
withdrawing). So, please which works best for me.
SPEAKER 4: I expect the meeting planning will understand the importance
of a
prayer covering for this event. I can always tell if prayer was
an
afterthought, or a main event, even before I arrive. Please pray
for my and
other's travel safety as well as for the Holy Spirit to move and
work in the
hearts of the audience.
KATHY COLLARD MILLER is the author of 40 books, including her recent
Why Do I
Put So Much Pressure On Myself? (Servant/Vine). She speaks nationally
and
internationally. Her desire is to help Christian women live in the
power of
their inheritance in Christ as Princesses of the King.
4. BOOK NOTES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Empty Womb, Aching Heart ~ Marlo Schalesk
Bethany House Publishers
Ive never felt the hand of God so strongly in my work as
when I was writing
Empty Womb, Aching Heart. In my own journey through infertility,
Ive found
nothing more helpful than the wisdom and insights of others who
have traveled
this same road and found hope and a deeper relationship with God
in the midst
of it. I wrote this book - to share the stories that helped me,
to let
others know they're not alone in this journey. Infertility is a
tough road,
it helps to have others walking with you.
This journey, Ive found, is not a sprint, but a marathon.
Infertility isn't
something you quickly get over or forget. I, like many others, live
with it
daily, monthly, through the years of my life. But Ive come
to understand
that the victors in this marathon aren't necessarily those who succeed
in
having children, but those who discover how to live their lives
to the
fullest, to trust God, despite the pain of dreams that may never
come true.
It's those people Ive joined hands with in Empty Womb, Aching
Heart, to run
this race, to face infertility and find hope on the journey. ~ Marlo
Schalesk

5. BULLETIN BOARD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OUR LAST QUESTION:
"How can I find and train women to help me run my church's
women's ministry?
~ Chris
ANSWERS:
LINDA says: Invite a dozen or more women to come to your home,
church, or
restaurant for a women's ministry planning meeting. Be sure to include
women
from different age and peer groups. Do not use pressure in your
invitation.
Let the Holy Spirit move. The ones who come are the ones God may
be moving to
help you.
As you meet, talk about the needs of your women, talk about ideas
to meet
these needs. This way, you will find out what areas these women
are most
passionate about. Also, ask the women for names and suggestions
of others
who may have an interest in helping. Ask the women to pray about
heading up
their ideas.
ALLISON says: Which women always come to your events? Identify
these women
and give them responsibilities, a few at a time to prove them faithful.
Then
give them more. This will help train them to be leaders. Also, don't
even
try to do it all yourself. Ask God to show you who to ask for help.
Some
women want to help, but don't know how. Ask for help, then tell
them how
they can help.
DARLA says: We use volunteer response cards and surveys to find
out who has
an interest in helping with women's ministry. Then we actually follow
up
with a phone call and suggestions and assignment on how they can
help.
NEXT QUESTION:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DONNA asks, "How do I get the older ladies at church to join
hands
with the younger ladies? How do I get rid of a spirit of hurt and
competition between the two groups?"
This is an open question to this mailing list. Responses may be
sent to WINNING WOMEN at RightToTheHeart@aol.com.
Include:
Your name and response. Subject line should read: DONNA'S Question.
I will try to post as many responses as I can in the next newsletter.
PLEASE KEEP RESPONSES BRIEF, UNDER 100 WORDS!
