3. MEET A WOMAN
WHO MINISTERS TO WOMEN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meet Brenda Pawlicki. She is the Administrator of "New
Beginnings-Mercy House" in Monroe County, Michigan.
When Brenda was 32, her mother shared with her that Brenda
had been an unwanted baby. In fact, Brenda's father had
obtained a drug from his doctor that would have ended his
wife's pregnancy. But Brenda's mother refused to take
it.
Then, thirty-two years later, Brenda's mother told her the story
of her birth. She wanted Brenda to know that she had a God-
given destiny to help young, pregnant girls.
Cindy Olan asked Brenda the following questions.
Q. How do you intend to finance Mercy House without the
assistance of federal aid or charging some sort of
fees to the pregnant girls?
A. The home will be run with community contributions, i.e.,
church organizations, civic groups, and private donations.
Q. Have you assisted any crisis pregnancies?
A. Around November 1998, we assisted our first client and
about twenty-five others. At least two women opted
to have
their babies!
Q. Can you tell us why so many young women chose abortion?
A. Shame and embarrassment, as well as parents who tell their
daughters not to come home pregnant, plus no place
to turn-
are the core reasons young women chose abortions.
Q. Why do you think "Mercy House" will make a difference?
A. Because we are committed to giving these girls the best we
can. Plus, unlike many other facilities, we will
offer aftercare-
continued counseling services.
Q. What are your plans for "Mercy House"?
A. First, we hope to purchase or build a home to house up to
fifty young girls and their babies. We plan to provide
crisis pregnancy counseling, referrals for medical
care,
no-fee maternal housing, continuing education for residents,
Bible studies and devotions, childbirth instruction,
assistance and counseling in making the decision to
parent
or make an adoption plan, post adoption counseling,
parenting, and assistance in caring for newborns.
--End Questions and Answers--
If you or someone you know is in a crisis pregnancy and are in
need of help or you want to help Mercy House, please call
4. LINDA'S STORY SPOT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following is a 40-second story from the files of my radio
show, Right To The Heart.
How does one survive a walk through the storms of life?
Just off Port Aransas, Texas, my husband and I walked down a
mile-long jetty made of huge granite blocks. As we jumped
from block to block, the rough waters of the Gulf of Mexico
sprayed across our path. On either side, we were surrounded
by seagulls and black dolphins dancing in the foamy waves.
But each time I allowed myself to become distracted by
the view, my tennis shoes would slip on the slick green moss that
covered our path. I kept my balance only when I concentrated
on each step of my walk.
The storms of life may crash around you, you may get
distracted from your journey, but you are safe, as long as you
focus on your walk, your walk with Christ.

FEATURE with Kathy Collard Miller

How to Work With The Speaker for Your Event
by Kathy Collard Miller
Its always a wonderful adventure as a speaker to work with the
person and the committee planning the event. Many women are
a little nervous when they contact a speaker and as they work
with one, they may wonder how they can have the best possible
relationship with the speaker. I surveyed several speakers,
asking them questions like:
* What is most helpful to prepare you for an event?
* What's most helpful during the event to make you feel
welcome and comfortable?
* What are your expectations?
* How do event planners drive you crazy?
* What little things can meeting planners do to make you feel
special and help with your day?
* How much assistance would you desire at the event?
Here is the answer to the first question:
1. What is the most helpful to prepare you for an event?
I'd like to have as much information as possible about the
group: age, martial status, number and ages of children,
spiritual maturity. I also like to know something about the
church or organization. I like to know what has been done
in
the past. On the practical side, the type of dress, weather
conditions, and information about where the event is being
held.
The more I know about a group, the church, the audience, and
the leadership team, the better the fit of the talk. I like being
mailed any promotional material that is used and a church
bulletin. I also find it helpful to know people are praying
specifically. One group sent me a note every week with the
specifics of how they were praying for me. That was so
encouraging!
I am helped when the host asks her questions/ concerns ahead
of time. For example, when a church has a theological
question, I prefer they ask it on the phone beforehand instead
of two minutes before I walk to the lectern. Also, knowing the
exact schedule and my place in the order of events is very
helpful. I know if I'm the last thing after a very long line of
testimonies, music numbers, fashion show, etc., I'll need to get
the audience up and involved because they are tired. Finally,
a
map is a must!
It's nice to know ahead of time the telephone number where my
family at home can reach me in an emergency. I want to know
how the women will dress so I'll know whether to pack my
professional looking suits or my dress-up denim and chambray
outfits.
TO BE CONTINUED NEXT ISSUE..

Teatime Stories for Women , Refreshment & Inspiration
to Warm Your Heart by Linda Evans Shepherd, Honor Books ©
2000.
This book is your invitation to tea with me and some very
special women. If you accept my invitation, we'll share
laughter and tears, especially when Connie tells us her hilarious
story, "Do You Know Where Your Children Are?" Be
sure to
have your tissues handy for Rachel's love story, "Sweethearts
and Heroes." And wait until you hear Marjorie's account
of a
tender miracle in "A Davy Crockett Hat for David."
These are
a few of the wonderful stories we will enjoy together.
I hope you will be warmed and encouraged as we celebrate
the beauty of womanhood with smiles, giggles, and sniffles.
I
believe that within the pages of this book, you will find
friendship and companionship. So come on in, sit down, and
have a cup of tea. Your hostess, Linda Evans Shepherd

7. BULLETIN BOARD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month's question was:
Sara wants to know: "I am very involved in leadership with
the women's ministry at church. Any suggestions as to how
to
balance my time so that I can be an effective wife and mother,
too? "
Cathy Miller (not Kathy Collard Miller) writes:
I want a balanced life too!
Here's a short checklist I use when evaluating ministry
opportunities:
1. Have I prayed about this opportunity?
2. Have I waited for God to speak to my heart through His
word?
3. Have I asked my husband whether or not he thinks I should
accept this opportunity?
4. Do I sense any "red flags" related to this invitation?
Have I
stopped to pray and consider them?
5. If I accept this opportunity will it be because I'm pressured
by someone else's need or because God is calling me?
(See Tyranny of the Urgent, IVP)
6. Is this an opportunity to delegate responsibility (and
blessing!) to someone else?
7. Is this an opportunity to choose my family over my passion
for ministry? Am I willing?
By Cathy Miller
Women's Neighborhood Bible Studies
San Diego, CA
Vickey Banks writes:
Sara,
Ahhh, the tap dance of a ministering Momma! One of the
greatest things about this constant struggle is that it forces us
to continually come to God for help. This is a good reality
and
keeps us at His feet - a perfect place.
It has helped me to realize I do not have to choose between
ministry and family, but that my family is the main part of my
ministry. Anytime I sense they do not feel like my priority,
I
know it's time to step back and reevaluate where I'm putting the
best of my time, energy, and talents. If I'm too busy to give
them these things, I'm just too busy.
Three practical pieces of advice that have helped me are:
* Try to do the vast part of your outside ministry when your
family is busy with their own worlds.
* Try to eliminate or severely limit regularly scheduled
ministry activities in the evenings. (This eliminates
carpool nightmares too!)
* Hang with your Hubby. I highly endorse Willard Harley's
counsel that "The couple who plays together, stays together!"
(His Needs, Her Needs).
My prayers are with you, Sara, as you strive to honor God by
lovingly caring for ALL those He is calling you to minister to.
I am intimately aware (sometimes painfully so) of how difficult
this can be. May your children want to know God more
because of you vs. in spite of you, may your husband never
question that he is still your main man, and may your God
smile and say, "Well done."

8. WOMEN BIBLE TEACHER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WIINNER of BIBLE STUDY CONTEST:
Elisabeth Corcoran----CONGRATULATIONS, you will
receive a copy of Linda's book, Teatime Stories for Women!
Here's Elisabeth's winning entry:
A couple months back I was being nudged. You know that
feeling - when the Spirit is trying to tell you something. I kept
being `haunted' by the idea of beginning a small group for
women - something slightly out of my comfort zone. However,
I knew it was the Spirit because
a) I kept thinking about it;
b) I wasn't scared to do it;
c) it excited me;
d) certain women were coming to mind to ask;
e) I actually laid it out in prayer and sat back for a bit
before pouncing on it (as I tend to do).
I wanted to pull together a study for women who were either
new believers or who, by no fault of their own, had been pulled
into the `serve-serve-serve' game. Interestingly, I found no
curriculum for this task - so I gathered several resources and
have been basically writing my own curriculum each week.
I prayed about the participants, asking the 8 women who kept
coming to my mind. Six of them have come almost each time.
These sessions have taught me tremendously - probably more
than anything else - that when you depend on the Spirit's
guidance, amazing things can happen.
9. WOMEN'S
MINISTRIES with Liz Curtis Higgs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a dozen years of providing women's programs in 49
states for more than 1,400 organizations--200 of them womens
health centers--I'm honored to share some fascinating facts I've
learned from audiences all across America.
First, Meet Their Needs
With all the technological changes we've weathered through
the 90s, the needs of women have remained surprisingly
constant. In order of preference, here are the themes and topics
that women responded to most often:
Balance 46%
Stress Relief 31%
Self-Esteem 17%
A decade later, were still stressed out, overworked and under-
humored, so these keynote topics hit a home run, again and
again.
Try Tuesdays
In order of frequency, here were the days that worked best:
Saturday -- 38%
Thursday -- 20%
Tuesday -- 18%
As popular as they are, Saturdays can be a major
disappointment. One client, Major Hospital in Shelbyville,
Indiana, planned their first event for women on a Saturday
in late September, allowing plenty of time to prepare and
promote. They planned a great day of programming
and designed a dynamite brochure.
A sure thing, yes?
One week before the event, we got the bad news--only 22
women had signed up, and most of them were elderly women,
not their target audience for that event.
The Saturday program was cancelled and boxloads of classy
flyers headed for the dumpster. Not wanting to be paid without
earning my fee, I suggested we simply reschedule the event for
a weeknight and see if that helped. It helped.
On a Tuesday evening the following February, 300 women
turned out for a fun night. Same speaker, same sponsor, same
location--but a much better day and time!
It's a fact: Women have about twenty weeknights a month, but
only four Saturdays. They wont easily give up the one day that
lets them put the house in order, shop and run errands, or enjoy
activities with family and friends.
Across the country I've watched attendance at Saturday events
leveling off or dropping, unless the event is already well-
established.
Shorter and less complicated evening programs proved to be a
better investment of time and money for sponsor and attendee.
Tuesdays are terrific because the event is less likely to be
competing with school or church programs and the typical end-
of-the-week time crunch.
Think Thursdays
Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota, traditionally did
their program for women on a Saturday in spring, with an
average attendance of 200. Due to the terrible flooding in April
1997, we rescheduled our event for a Thursday evening in
March 1998. Nearly 500 women found time in their busy lives
to squeeze in an evening of humor--more than double the
attendance of their Saturday event!
They surveyed the audience about their preference for future
events--Saturday day or Thursday night? The results--102
favored Saturday, but a whopping 385 preferred Thursday
evening!
Thursdays are thrilling because the work week is almost over
and women are ready for a stress break!

Prayer Circle to Join
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's a word from Mildred Yamasaki, my board member
from Straight From the Heart, who oversee's our
prayer ministry.
Mildred writes:
As a woman who ministers to other women, are you interested
in having prayer support? If you are, please pray about
participating in Sister's Heart. You can e-mail us for more
information at (put in the e-group address). This group will
be broken into groups of 5 - 10 ladies to be a circle of
prayer for each other. This is a place to bring and share
personal prayer request with each other. It is my hope to put
together groups of ladies based on how often they want to
share requests. In this way we can bring like minds together
in prayer. We will set up E-groups of women so you have a
common area and address for your group.
These groups are not a substitute for mentoring, or sound
counsel. WE at Straight from the Heart are not responsible
for the content of these groups.
It is our intent that these groups have the sole purpose of
prayer. Please remember what is prayed in these groups will
stay in these groups. In this way we can provide a safe
environment for honest intercession.
With Heavenly Blessings,
