1. WELCOME BACK!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all,
We are so glad you are here.  THIS IS SO EXCITING!  Thank you so
much for your tremendous outpouring of support. Requests to be added
to the mailing list flooded my office. In one month's time we went from 200
to 1600 subscribers and the count is still climbing! I think we struck a
chord because so many of us feel the isolation of our leadership roles in the
ministry. I hope to change that by building bonds of community, connections,.
and helps.
Many of you told me of your needs, concerns, and challenges like: burn out,
ministry wounds, getting women involved, leading women to leadership
positions, the challenges of speaking, and the challenge of balancing
your time with your ministry, your family, and your Lord, just to name a few.
Our goal is to cover these issues and more.  Stay tuned! We have a lot
to talk about!   Plus, we want your input.  This is YOUR ministry.  Let us
know how we can help!
SUPPORT LOOP NEWS:
half of the body of Christ! God wants to use us! God is equipping
us for new ministries and new purposes. He is calling us to go forth
and minister to his sheep and to find His lost lambs!  If this call
makes your heart pound, as it does mine, I recommend you
3. MEET A WOMAN WHO MINISTERS TO WOMEN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Meet Barb Evans . . .

Director of the Women's Ministry at Rocky Mountain Christian Church
(1900 weekly attendees), Boulder County, Colorado.

LINDA'S NOTE: Barb is a member of my Straight From the Heart
Board of Director's. She is the co-director of our new June 2001
conference, Women Who Minister to Women, which will be held at
Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Colorado.

Q:  What are your duties as director of Women's Ministry at RRCC?

A:  My staff position consists of vision casting and developing what God
wants to be doing in and through the women at RMCC. This involves
recruiting and training leaders; developing and managing budgets;
running the monthly board meeting; some personal counseling; and
responsibility for the various women's Bible studies, retreats, events,
conferences, outreach, and mentoring programs.  Recently, I have also
focused on integrating the Women's Ministry with other staff-led
ministries.

Q:  How did you know that God was calling you to women's ministry?

A:  I was not a born leader.  All my life I was a shy follower until Christ
began leading me slowly out of my shell and toward women's ministry.
By progressing from leadership roles in children's groups, then to
small groups for women, and finally to large groups for women, God
gradually taught me leadership skills and increased my comfort level
with being a leader. In 1986, at a Conference in Tempe, Arizona, I was
awed by what God could do in and through women. At that moment, I
knew that women's ministry was my calling, but it would be seven long
years before God opened the doors to fulfill this vision for me.

Q:  How did you get the church to support your effort?

A:  In 1992 -- the first summer I attended RMCC -  several of the
women's leaders asked me to assist them in creating a more unified
and expanded women's ministry. Even though it had been my heart's
desire since 1986, God surprised me that summer with his choice
of me to lead the efforts to effect those changes. At that time, the
Women's Ministry at RMCC consisted of two separate ministries
which were operating independently. After much preparation and
with the support of the women, I presented to the elders a detailed
plan with the purpose of uniting the women and moving them forward
on a single path. Because God had opened the door to changing the
Women's Ministry, the Elders blessed our plans that same night. The
next day, I assumed my part-time volunteer position and with the
support and help of the other women, we began moving forward on this
new path for the women of RMCC.

Q:  How did you go from volunteer to paid staff?

A:  In 1997, a number of events pointed to the need for a paid staff
position. With the support and presence of the key women's leaders, I
presented to the Pastors the growing scope of the women's ministry
and the need for a staff position. The most influential fact for the Pastors
was the need for a single point of accountability given the growing
number of women now involved in Women's Ministry leadership. Moving
from a volunteer position to a paid position involved asking, which was
very difficult for me. However, it was an important milestone in the recognition
of the Women's Ministry.

Q:  What would you say to other women who feel God calling them to
work with the women at their church?

A:  First, pray and be willing to wait for God's moving and timing. Begin
where God has given you an open door, even if that door seems small.
Remember it takes time to grow your influence and leadership - respect
must be earned. It is important to gather the support of other women and
leaders by being a team player, supporting other ministries in your
church and above all by maintaining your personal integrity. Always hold
your ministry with an open hand - it is God's ministry and not yours.
Leadership will challenge you in many ways.  People will try to put you
on a pedestal that you know you cannot attain. It is really important
for you to have a few mentors that you trust, respect and can go to for
support and guidance. Above all else, keep Christ as your first love - He
must always be more important than your ministry and personal goals.

Ministry area. Barb's e-mail address is bevans@rmcc.org.

4. LINDA'S STORY SPOT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following is a 40-second story from the files of my radio show,
Right To The Heart.
Recently I was teaching a group of writers at the Colorado Christian
Writer's Conference. Our classroom was perched in the upper room
of a mountain lodge. I told my class, "God has appointed each one
of us to do good works. Why?  It's not so much that He needs us to
do the good works, as He wants to have a relationship with us as we
do the good works.  Besides, does He really need us to write about
His love?"
I pointed out the window. "Look at the mountains. If He wanted,
He could write His love on the mountainside."
We all stopped and grazed at the majestic peaks outside our window.
"Look," I whispered. "He's done just that."
I turned back to the writers.  "I think what God really wants from us,
is not our work or our accomplishments. What He really wants
from us, is our hearts as we walk with Him."   (c) Linda Evans
LINDA'S NOTE:
Carol Kent's article was the most popular feature in our last issue,
Summer 2000 Issue.
Here's her conclusion:
HOW TO DEVELOP A POWERFUL SPEAKING STRATEGY
(continued....)
By Carol Kent
6.  USE SHORT, SIMPLE OUTLINES.
An outline is a systematic listing of the most important points
you are making. Make sure each point is memorable by
keeping it simple enough to write down quickly.  (If you can't
recall your own outline from memory, the audience won't
remember either!)
7.  GRAB AUDIENCE ATTENTION WITH A GOOD
RAPPORT STEP.
The "rapport step" is your introduction. It's the first part of the talk,
but planned last (in your message preparation), because until you
understand your content, you don't know how to do a good
introduction of the subject. Also, complete your rapport step with
a strong transitional statement that will lead into the body of your talk.
8.  ILLUSTRATE WITH STORIES.
We live in a postmodern world. People are accustomed to sound bites
and they have short attention spans. Find stories from your own life,
as well as from other sources, that will capture the heart of the
listener. Work for balance with the illustrations in a message with a good
combination of "laughter and tears" (some illustrations that are
hilariously funny and others that will touch the emotions).
9.  USE DIRECT EYE CONTACT AND GOOD GESTURES.
When you get up to speak, pause for a moment and look at the
audience. Let your eyes move around the room "connecting" with
specific individuals. When gesturing, make sure you have two or
three inches between your upper torso and your upper arm. Wider
gestures and direct eye contact will make you look confident before
you feel confident.
10. GIVE THE GLORY BACK TO GOD.
When you've done your homework and have opportunities to
teach and speak, you will be greatly exhilarated when people comment:
"You're the best speaker we've ever had!"  or "Your message changed
my life!"  Just remember, all you did was have the awesome privilege of
bringing Jesus to them.
6. BOOK NOTES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Ok, I survived-now what?" was a question I asked over and
over after the lost of my health (bone marrow transplant for breast
cancer), job, and marriage. Although adversity is a part of life
many of us care to avoid, we all experience some form of it.

My book, A GIFT OF MOURNING GLORIES, offers a practical
five-step approach for those struggling to rebuild after loss and for
those who are attempting to care for them. The steps to healing begin
with allowing time to grieve and end with sharing what we have
learned with others:

        G  ive Yourself Time to Grieve
        I   nvestigate and Observe
        F  ind the Value
        T  ake the Risk
        S  hare Your gifts with Others

Using analogies from my love of gardening, the short inspirational
stories are gathered from my experiences and those of others.

8. BULLETIN BOARD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                   Last month's question was:

Julie wants to know: "How do you get the women in your church to
participate in women's events?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHAREN WATSON writes:  BLACKMAIL, OF COURSE !!!
And of course, I'm just kidding!  Well, mostly I'm a walking adver-
tisement, broadcasting what a great time the women will have if
they come. Secondly, and probably most effectively, are the
advertisements in the Church Bulletin, Newsletter, and also a sign-up
table located in plain view as the women go in and out of church.
Another effective method we use is the "buddy system" approach.
Usually, an outgoing member of our congregation will "connect" with
a new lady, and actually bring her to the event...in her car, kicking
and screaming (oops, not really).  But it helps to give the new women
an opportunity to come meet others, and gives the seasoned women
purpose. Our pastor's wife is excellent at this!
Most importantly, prayer is the utmost effective at bringing the
women in according to need. God knows who needs what, and we
rely on His leading completely . . . being careful not to plan events just
for "events" sake, but for the Lord's Ministry. The times we've
attempted an event for "events" sake the door was shut. And that's
great!!! I would rather not "spin wheels" when it's not necessary. Of
course, I would rather not "spin these wheels" at all.  They don't "spin"
as fast as they used to.  :)  PRAYER . . . I'd say that about sums it up.
LIZ CURTIS HIGGS suggests you try hosting an event on a Thursday
night instead of a Saturday morning.  Liz has written an excellent article
about this idea called What Do Women Really Want?, which will
appear in our next (Winter) issue.  In the mean time, you are invited to
visit Liz's web site at:  www.LizCurtisHiggs.com.
BRENDA NIXON thinks the key is hosting event topics of interest to
your women. Brenda says, "My response is narrow but very effective!
I promote topics most women relate to: parenting. Something on discipline
or (snicker) toilet teaching is a woman magnet. I've worked with women's
ministry programs when they wanted to add parent enrichment to their
outreach and ministry program. The enthusiasm and timelessness of
parent education cannot be overlooked by our churches as young families
are the church's future.  Brenda Nixon, speaker (816) 361-9811.
9. WOMEN BIBLE TEACHER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Welcome to our rotating feature for women Bible teachers. This feature
is hosted by Bible teacher and author, Eva Marie Everson. Eva is also
one of my new loop moderators for Women Bible Teachers.  Next month
our rotating feature will be for WOMEN'S MINISTRY DIRECTOR'S by
Kathy Collard Miller.

In this first WOMEN BIBLE TEACHER feature, Eva will discuss:

WHERE'S YOUR HEART

By Eva Marie Everson

A person's desire to teach the word of God may come from many
different areas. Some of you are natural born teachers. If you have
the most remote piece of knowledge, you feel compelled to pass it
on to others! Like Jarius in Matthew 5, you've just "got to tell
somebody!" Some of you have a desire to teach because you have
what is often called the "prophet's heart." The prophet has a clear
sense of right and wrong and feels the need to "teach" those
boundaries and truths to others.

Teaching the word of God is exciting and rewarding, but before you
begin, examine your heart to determine WHY you desire to do this.
It's a lot of hard work and  is not about "you" or "me."  It's about God!

Each week I teach for an hour and-a-half. This short period of time is
the result of no less than six to ten hours of preparation, with my lap top
opened, my Bible spread out before me, pens and papers scattered
about, and other reference books stacked at my feet. While my students
are considering what to wear to class, I am pouring over my notes.
I have spent much time in prayer; not only for the message, but for
those who will hear it.

Because I teach the word of God, I am the clay pigeon in a spiritual
skeet shoot. The enemy hates what I do...and if you teach the word
of God, he hates what you do, too! He will stop at nothing to make
life difficult and to try to persuade us to release our position in Christ
as a teacher of His truth. Fiercely we hold on because our hearts
are set on heavenly principles rather than self. Self would have
given up a long time ago!

Teaching the Word of God never comes easily. It's a commitment
you make and stand by. The rewards are many, but in the end,
they are not why we choose to teach. We choose to teach because
God has called us...and we desire to be faithful. That alone will get
us through.

EVA'S BIO:  Eva Marie Everson is the author of True Love; Engaging
Stories of Real-Life Proposals (Promise Press, 2000.)  Eva Marie instructs
Old Testament theology in Orlando, Florida and speaks on subjects
designed to bring God's children to a more intimate walk with Him.
