1. WELCOME TO OUR FIRST
ISSUE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is my hope that this electronic magazine (e-zine) will be an
encouragement and inspiration to you, as you minister to women.
I also hope that it will be a place of community--a place to know
you are not alone--a place to make friends--and a place to find
the ministry helps you need.
I started this e-zine because I know how lonely it can be when
you are a woman in ministry. Though I have had many friends
come alongside me when I needed guidance, encouragement, or
advice, there have been times I could not find the connections I
needed. I've also learned that as a "public person" with a "public
ministry," it can be hard to find a friend who has experienced the
issues I'm dealing with. It's been hard for me to go to my home
church and talk about publishing woes, the dreams I have for my
new books, or tell of an exciting event that I keynoted. As many
of my speaking friends will attest, "My church friends love me,
but they can't always relate!"
I have also noticed a similar phenomenon in the churches I've
visited. Often, when I come into a church for a speaking event,
I've
found that the event coordinator feels isolated. Her leadership
role
has separated her from the very women she is trying to reach.
Often, she tells me, "Not only do I feel alone in my ministry
position, I often do not have the benefit of talking with others
who have experience with the ministries I am trying to create
or direct."
I hope this e-zine will help connect you with other women in
ministry who are happy to share, encourage, and care about
you and your challenges.
Our e-zine will consist of spiritually refreshing interviews with
women in ministry, women's ministry directors and volunteers,
ministry helps from well-known Christian authors and speakers,
and an encouraging story spot.
Lastly, my non-profit, Right to the Heart, will be hosting two new
retreats. One retreat will be held in Colorado for women's
ministry directors and the other retreat will be held just prior
to
CBA 2001 in Georgia as an advanced writer's/speaker's retreat.
Details to be announced.
I am glad you could join us!
2. MEET A WOMAN
WHO MINISTERS TO WOMEN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meet Dee Sanford from San Diego, California.
Linda's Note:
Dee Sanford has founded a prayer breakfast for black women
entrepreneurs. This is an idea I think could be emulated across
the country by churches, speakers, and business women of all
races and backgrounds.
Q. How did you get started?
A. I was in management in corporate American for 20 years. I
always wanted and needed a professional support system made
up of women who looked like me and preferably were Christians.
. . I met a dynamic woman who exemplified professionalism and
who was a great speaker. I decided to get a group together to
hear her speak and to then see what materialized. Our first
meeting had 35 women. It was a great success.
Q. How often do you meet?
A. We meet every third Friday, except in July.
Q. Tell us about your speakers and their topics.
A. We have a speaker at every meeting. Preferably one who
has participated in the group at least once. We have had a variety
of topics, including: Investments, Web Design, Managing Change,
Team Building, Business Opportunities, Successful Aging,
Professional speaking, and many motivational topics. Speakers
have about 25 minutes with a 5 minute Q & A.
Q. What kind of format does your meeting have?
A. We gather into a circle holding hands. I welcome new
attendees and thank regulars for their support. We have an
opening prayer and blessing of the food.
After breakfast is served, we begin introductions, asking
attendees to let us know what they do, what they offer, and what
they need. After the presentation, we have community
announcements, give away items that have been donated
(including a free breakfast for the next meeting), have a closing
prayer circle with an "inner circle" of folks with special needs,
and then visit with the vendors who set up to show their wares
or display their businesses.
Q. How much does the event cost?
A. The breakfast is $18 in advance, $20 cash at the door.
Vendor tables are $12 with breakfast.
Q. Where do you hold your event and how much does that
facility charge you?
A. We have held most of our meetings at the Quality Resort in
San Diego's Hotel Circle in Mission Valley.
We do not pay the hotel for the room if we make a firm commit-
ment of at least 25. Our attendance is usually between 30 and
40 women.
Q. Do people attending the meetings have booths to exchange
business info, or do they just mingle and pass out business
cards?
A. All of the above. We also offer one another business
opportunities. Several of the women are corporate employees
who are looking for services. Members have formed strategic
alliances to handle larger projects.
Q. What would you say to a woman who wanted to start one of
these in her own community?
A. It is needed! Go for it! Christian business women understand
the value and power of prayer in running a business or dealing
with the corporate environment.
I was pleased to see how many women responded. I didn't
always advertise it as a prayer and networking meeting, but when
I added "prayer" on the monthly flyer, our attendance increased
by 50%!
It is a lot of work, but worth it. I do most of the work myself
(handling speakers, emailing and mailing flyers, preparing
registration lists, receipts, creating name Subjects, facilitating,
etc.) I keep the price low, and there is no membership fee.
I have also controlled growth. People are brought to the meeting,
and added to the list by invitation. This has keep the group true
to the original cause.
God has blessed us tremendously!
Dee's Bio:
Dee is an internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and
trainer with 26 years of corporate and entrepreneur experience.
Dee realized that small business owners needed more exposure,
support, training, and networking opportunities. She founded the
African American Business Women of Vision, a Christian net-
working organization; hosts "Business to Business," a TV show
featuring multicultural small business owners; and just organized
the International Speakers and Trainers Group. Dee recently
received Guru.com's "United We Work" award for her work with
entrepreneurs.

3. LINDA'S STORY SPOT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following is a 40-second story from the files of my radio show,
Right To The Heart.
The king's servant carried two clay pots hung from a pole he carried
across his shoulders. At the well, he filled each pot with cool
water.
The first pot was a fine pot that never leaked a drop. But the
second pot leaked water back along the path. Finally the
cracked pot protested. "Why do you use me?" he asked the
servant. Can't you see I'm cracked?
"Ah," the servant answered. "You suit my purpose. You see, I
have planted flowers along our path. Haven't you not noticed how
they bloom beneath you?"
Isn't that like God? He loves to use cracked pots that will spill
his
love to others. (c) Linda Evans Shepherd 2000
4. SPEAKER'S FEATURE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Linda's Note:
As I have just come from New Orleans and CBA (The Christian
Booksellers Convention), I have seen many of my dear friends
who are ministering for our Lord from the platform. I was so
impressed with their obedience to follow the call God has placed
on their lives. As many of us know, this call consists not only
of
the applause at the end of a presentation, but includes hard work
and sacrifice. I salute all of you who make that sacrifice to
encourage and minister to women.
Right to the Heart is also starting a moderated online group for
ADVANCED published writers and speakers. The group is limited
to those who have:
1. Accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.
2. Published two or more nonfiction books in either CBA or
ABA.
3. Published works listed in Amazon.com.
4. Spoken three or more times a year to groups that consist of
100 or more people.
To join this group, please write ADVANCED SPEAKER in the
subject line of your next email to me at Linda@righttotheheart.com.

NOW FOR OUR SPEAKER'S FEATURE:
Many of the top Christian speakers receive this e-zine. This corner
will be reserved for news and helps to encourage them. For our first
issue, Carol Kent will cover the basics of developing a powerful
speaking strategy.
HOW TO DEVELOP A POWERFUL SPEAKING STRATEGY
By Carol Kent
1. PREPARE YOUR HEART.
Check your motives. Are you looking for the limelight or is your
genuine motivation to glorify God by teaching His principles to
people who need to be evangelized, discipled, or encouraged?
Confess all sin and ask God to open the doors where your
teaching/speaking skills could be used.
2. OBSERVE OTHER CHRISTIAN COMMUNICATORS.
Make notes as you attend conferences and retreats. Notice the
introduction, the clarity of the outline, the well-developed illustrations,
and the wrap-up. What held the attention of the audience? Write
down the delivery skills used by effective speakers.
3. ATTEND A PUBLIC SPEAKING SEMINAR.
Be a learner. Attend a class or seminar that will sharpen your
speaking skills and give you an opportunity to "try out" your material
in a risk-free environment. A "Speak Up With Confidence" seminar
or CLASS" seminars will both give you training from a Christian
perspective.
4. START WHERE YOU ARE.
Speakers do not begin their ministries at arena events. Most of
them start with a home or church Bible study. Others begin
sharing their personal testimonies at local Christian Women's
Clubs or churches. Look around you. Who is in your sphere of
influence, right now, who needs a small group study? As your
gifts are developed and recognized, people who have been
challenged by your teaching/speaking will spread the word to
others. That's how ministry multiplies.
5. KNOW YOUR AIM.
Write a mission statement for your message. Answer the question:
What do I want to encourage my audience to DO as a result of
hearing this talk? Use verbs that define a follow-through change
in
attitude or behavior that could be evaluated as being completed
by
the next week. If your aim statement seems too weak, add on the
question, "by doing WHAT?"
WATCH FOR THE LAST 5 STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPING A
POWERFUL SPEAKING MINISTRY IN THE FALL ISSUE OF
E-ZINE!

5. BOOK NOTES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This segment is about new books! Our first guest is Leslie
Vernick, the author of The TRUTH Principle (WaterBrook Press.)
Leslie Vernick shares the heart of her book, The TRUTH Principle,
with us ~
"Have you ever tried talking with someone who wasn't listening?
Or worse, was hearing you but not believing you? Our relationship
with God is often like that. Sometimes our prayers are one way
conversations where the only one doing the talking is us. Prayer
is a dialogue, not a monologue. It is a two way conversation,
talking and listening. For as Psalm 46:10 says, 'Be still and
know that I am God.'
"God doesn't just want us to believe in Him, but to believe Him.
'
Abram believed God and it was credited unto him as righteous-
ness.' (Genesis 15:6)
"Believing God leads to a deeper trust and a willingness to obey
Him out of love, not duty. Jesus tells us 'if anyone loves me, he
will obey my teaching.' (John 14:23)
"Intimacy with God is something most of us want, but fewer know
how to cultivate. Hearing Him, believing Him, loving Him and
obeying Him will transform our faith from knowledge in our head
to
life-changing trust in our heart."
Model For Spiritual Growth and Maturity (WaterBrook Press, 2000)
Ordinary Woman/Extraordinary God
"A Lighthearted Place on the Web for Today's Christian Women"
This outreach started in April 1999 by screenwriter, author, and
speaker Misty Taggart, has grown from just a handful of women
to a mailing list verging on 6,000. The OWEG website is #3 on
the Christian Counter - and has hit over 450,000 views since
September 1999.
"I started OWEG for me," said Misty, with a smile, "because I
needed a place to share my love for the Lord and what He has
done in my life. I was compelled to do it with my gift of writing."
Other women must have needed it too. As the OWEG website and
her online journaling workshops quickly became so popular Misty
has added more workshop dates and is traveling around the country
speaking at churches and women's seminars.
The women on her growing email list receive a monthly online
OWEG Newsletter, new 'Imagined by Misty' pages and updates on
her other new writings and speaking dates. They also take advantage
of Online chats with noted Christian women . . . See what's new
in
Christian books and, also, visit the OWEG Gift Shop - for wonderful
gifts to remind each one they are an ORDINARY WOMAN with an
EXTRAORDINARY God.
To quote one of the OWEGers who wrote in Misty's guestbook.
"OWEG is where I go when the day has been beating me down. I
smile, I cry . . . and I feel close to God."
Ordinary Woman/Extraordinary God also has its own browser
